THE QUIZ SHOW SCANDAL — PBS Special 1992
Produced, Directed & Written by Julian Krainin and Michael Lawrence.
A look at one of the most bizarre and disillusioning chapters in the history of broadcasting.
During the mid-1950s Americans were glued to their television sets each evening as everyone watched quiz show contestants Charles Van Doren, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Herb Stempel, and Teddy Nadler on hit programs like “The $64,000 Dollar Question” and “Twenty-One.” Viewers were amazed to see the transformation of ordinary Americans into national heroes, almost overnight.
“The Quiz Show Scandal” is a true story about how more than 100 million viewers were deceived. We see how shame and fear led well-educated, highly respected middle-class citizens, both contestants and television producers, to destroy their lives by participating in a fraud, and then by attempting to cover it up by committing perjury. It was one of America’s most deeply felt scandals, because everyone trusted the new medium of television and its new heroes who they had welcomed into their living rooms, and into their lives.
Following the scandal, most of the contestants and producers went into hiding. Participants speak out publicly in this film for the very first time, to reveal the true depths of the fraud, and to reflect on America’s loss of innocence.
